One of the best-known piano sonatas of all time, the Moonlight Sonata opens an anthology that then progresses through Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries, with the rare Sonata No. 4 Op. 56 of Weinberg (née Vajnberg, 1919–1996), a Polish composer who resided in the former Soviet Union, two of the collections of Preludes and Impromptus on which Scriabin worked from 1894 to 1895, and the first series of Rachmaninoff’s Ètudes-Tableaux, which he composed in 1911.
