Matthias Martelli returns to the Teatro Cucinelli with Mistero buffo by Dario Fo and Franca Rame, in the version originally directed by Eugenio Allegri.

The actor is alone on stage, without tricks, intent on drawing the audience into the dramatic action, leaping in a flash from comic lazzo to poetry, all the way to human and social tragedy. A new and original language and interpretation, in the tradition of a genre used by medieval jesters to overturn the triumphant ideology of their time by exposing its groundlessness. In this staging, the word of the “giullarate” returns to the public with new energy, after conquering Italian and international audiences with its explosive mix of comedy, poetry and social denunciation.

Written in 1969, Mistero buffo is considered the seed of narrative theatre: a one-act composed of monologues inspired by religious themes and reinvented through grammelot, the onomatopoeic language that made Fo famous.

“The most compelling piece of physical theatre one could witness in a lifetime.” Loretta Monaco, London Theatre
