R. Schumann (1810-1856) — Concerto for cello and orchestra op. 129
L. van Beethoven (1770-1827) — Symphony No. 2
Two “serene” works, both born on the edge of the precipice: Schumann's Cello Concerto, composed in a single week in 1850 at the beginning of his Düsseldorf period, shortly before the worsening of his condition; and Beethoven's Second Symphony, brimming with energy and momentum, completed in 1802 as the composer came to terms with his irreversible deafness.
