Two works from the 1830s, precious fruits of Schumann's inexhaustible fantasieren: the Sonata op. 11, dedicated to Clara, the future Mrs Schumann, and published in 1836 as the work of the composer's two alter-ego masks, Florestan and Eusebius; and Kreisleriana, eight “fantasies” for piano composed in 1838 as a tribute to Johannes Kreisler, the eccentric Kapellmeister “wreathed in melodies and harmonies” who is the protagonist of E.T.A. Hoffmann's story cycle of the same name.
