“Playing Travolti da un insolito destino nell’azzurro mare di agosto by Lina Wertmüller, one of Italy’s greatest film directors, is a challenge we decided to embrace with due humility. The play evokes the film without merely imitating it, translating the cinematic vision into a theatrical action through the presence and physicality of the actors (who sweat, chase, fight, and love each other on stage). A symbolic dimension that makes room for imagination and memory, through sharp dialogue that ranges from grotesque to poignant and comical. From this perspective, it is an extraordinary privilege for me to work with such talented and perceptive actors as Euridice Axen and Giuseppe Zeno, who took on the challenge of interpreting the roles of two giants of Italian cinema like Mariangela Melato and Giancarlo Giannini. Equilibrists, wrestlers, enemies, and lovers, Gennarino and Raffaella fill the stage with sensual tension and rough poetry that make their way into their hardened hearts. Amid the island’s wild, primordial landscape, they will seek a state of nature where they can meet and love one another beyond all differences.”
